Key elements of the summer program:

  • 5 days a week from 7:30am-4pm for six weeks
  • 4 core academically rigorous classes and 2 elective classes
  • Daily homework
  • High expectations for both teachers and students
  • Exciting, interactive classes, taught by intelligent, enthusiastic college students from North Carolina.
  • 3:1 student-teacher ratio

Student U. teachers are supported throughout the summer by four Mentor Teachers, certified teachers from the Durham Public Schools, Duke, and Durham Academy as well as four first year Teach for America teachers.  These teachers spend two weeks with the college age teachers before the students arrive, working on curriculum development, lesson planning, and classroom and time management.  Throughout the summer, these Mentor Teachers observe the college students minimally once a week and conference with the college students, providing the support they need to succeed in the classroom.

Student U. uses a curriculum for Math, Science, Global Connect, and English which is developed by the Mentor Teachers, focusing on the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade North Carolina Standard Course of Study for the specific subject.  The Global Connect curriculum combines social studies, history, and geography and feature lessons on global awareness and activism.  Elective classes are developed by Student U. teachers according to their individual passions and expertise.  Examples include the Art of Arguing, the Planet Patrol, the History of Hip Hop and chef school.  The summer program also includes special field trips and community events such as Student U. Olympics, Community Service Day, and Career Day.
